FAQ

All the things you need to know, that you didn't know that you wanted to know.

What is Restoration?

The practice of ecological restoration involves aiding the rehabilitation of an ecosystem that has been negatively impacted, whether it's been degraded, damaged, or destroyed. Our company specializes in helping you create a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also ecologically diverse and flourishing.

Why Native Plants?

Native plants — especially when grown in natural plant communities — are the foundation of the food web. They support drastically more insect biomass than nonnatives, and provide other essentials for the wild creatures who built an evolutionary partnership with them eons ago. When we garden with natives we’re doing crucial conservation work, and doing ourselves a favor as well, because native plants are low maintenance, often drought tolerant, and easily compete with the beauty of exotic plants.

What sets us apart form other landscaping companies?

While we will design you a space that is beautiful, functional, and low maintenance - we never apply pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. We won't plant your invasive bamboo, we will never recommend installing a turf lawn, and we don’t do lawn maintenance.

What is the best time for restoration?

The best time to complete restoration projects is in the Fall and Winter. Due to the warm dry summers, plants are happiest when they are transplanted in the colder, wetter conditions and then are able to go dormant in the winter season.

Will you remove invasive species?

Yes! We are happy to remove your invasive species for you. This is usually the first step of each project as there are many different species that have caused problems on Vancouver Island. Some of the most common are Scotch Broom, Himalayan Blackberry, Morning Glory (Bindweed), English Ivy, Knotweed, Periwinkle, Daphne Laurel etc.

Will you incorporate edible species in my garden?

We are keen to incorporate edible species. Our idea is to make spaces that are suitable and functional for other species and you! Less than 5% of our food supply comes from the island - but there is so much room to grow! Lets change that!
